nycWhen I've been to AA and NA meetings 2013-12-26 13:20:20I often had the sneaking suspicion that many people in those rooms (especially the 'guest speakers') were exaggerating their down-and-dirty drunk and drug days for attention. It was almost like you were more popular and respected if your backstory was REALLY dark and dramatic (with some funny tidbits thrown in, for more attention). All very high school but with grown men and women. I also could see that a lot of the younger people, especially the young women, were really dramatic and seemed to enjoy the drama, always crying during the speakers talks, and jabbering about it afterwards like schoolgirls. I think a lot of it is bullshit and plenty of people there cling to the drama and the disease stuff for a variety of emotional reasons that have little to do with drugs/alcohol.
